Vall d'en Bas Village Walk: Hostalets to Sant Esteve
Walk the valley floor from Els Hostalets toward Sant Esteve, with lunch, road crossings and the return decided before the fields open out.

The Vall d’en Bas walk is gentle because it stays with the valley, not because every metre is paved or traffic-free. Starting among the arcaded houses of Els Hostalets, it crosses working agricultural country toward Sant Esteve and asks for more attention at farm junctions than its modest gradient suggests.
The Vall d’en Bas council route page lists a Hostalets–Sant Esteve route among twelve family-oriented options. Download the current track before leaving; field lanes multiply and a phone’s shortest line may use a road that the official route avoids.
Start with the village, then open the stride
Give Els Hostalets half an hour before walking. Carrer de la Teixeda and the compact centre deserve attention without treating flowered balconies as public sets. Park in a marked area and keep residential access clear.
The full out-and-back is roughly 7–9 kilometres depending on the chosen links. Allow three to four hours including villages and lunch. Leave early in summer because the open valley has less shade than the easy profile implies. Carry water and sun protection.
At road crossings, regroup before anyone steps out. Dogs need control around livestock, and gates must be left as found. After heavy rain, use the muddy path rather than widening it through a field—or shorten the route.

Let lunch determine the turnaround
Sant Esteve works as the far anchor only when the group has enough time and energy to walk back. Reserve Sunday lunch and set a turnaround from that booking. A simple meal may cost €18–30 per person.
A taxi can convert the route into a one-way walk, but only if confirmed beforehand with pickup point and fare. Do not reach Sant Esteve assuming a vehicle will be waiting. Without that arrangement, preserve half the group’s energy for the return.
Compare Vall d’en Bas stays by walking access and meal availability, but only when an overnight improves a wider valley visit; lodging is not required for the walk.

Shorten without losing the valley
The route is not consistently step-free. Ask the tourism office for a paved segment if wheelchair or pushchair access matters. Families can walk an out-and-back from Hostalets and turn at a chosen time rather than making Sant Esteve a compulsory achievement.
In heavy rain, drive between the two villages, take short public-space circuits and use Olot for indoor time. If heat becomes severe, keep the Hostalets morning and lunch, then omit the exposed connection.
The successful day is measured by the valley remaining visible in the pace: farm work, long views and two settlements connected without rushing across the roads between them.
