La Garrotxa by Car: Santa Pau, Castellfollit and Besalú
A measured one-day drive through three distinct Garrotxa towns, with parking outside their historic centers and enough time to walk.

Santa Pau, Castellfollit de la Roca and Besalú are often compressed into a list of medieval photo stops. They make a much better day when each is allowed to do a different job: Santa Pau opens the morning quietly, Castellfollit explains the geology, and Besalú carries the late afternoon without an anxious departure for a fourth village.
From Girona, drive first to Santa Pau. From Olot, the same order still works, with a shorter first leg. Check the municipal visitor pages for Santa Pau, Castellfollit de la Roca and the Besalú tourist office before leaving; navigate to a signed public car park rather than dropping a pin inside a historic square.
Morning in Santa Pau
Allow about ninety minutes for the porticoed main square, the lanes around the castle exterior and a coffee. The village sits within the volcanic landscape, but this is not the day to add the Santa Margarida crater or Fageda d’en Jordà. Either would turn the morning into a real walk and squeeze the remaining towns.
Leave the car at the edge and enter on foot. Old streets can be narrow enough that a navigation app proposes an awkward resident route. If the signed lot is full, follow local overflow instructions instead of circling through the center.

A short stop at Castellfollit
Castellfollit de la Roca needs less time but more attention. Walk through the elongated village toward the viewpoint where the houses meet the basalt cliff. The point is not merely the photograph: the exposed columns make the volcanic foundation of the area visible beneath an inhabited town.
Set aside 45–60 minutes. In fog or heavy rain, the view can disappear and wet paving deserves care. That is a reason to shorten the stop, not to seek an unofficial cliff edge.
Compare compact rental cars for the Garrotxa day only after checking the deposit, excess, fuel policy, mileage and additional-driver terms. A small car is easier at village approaches, but it does not make pedestrian lanes legal to enter.

Let Besalú absorb the afternoon
Besalú has enough substance for two or three hours: cross the fortified bridge slowly, follow the streets toward Plaça de la Llibertat, and choose one interior only if its opening is confirmed. Lunch near Santa Pau or Olot prevents the day from depending on a late kitchen; Besalú can then be an unhurried walk and early dinner.
Allow nine to eleven hours from Girona, including roughly three hours of driving in ordinary conditions and four to seven kilometers on foot. Starting from Barcelona makes the road share too large for one day; sleep in Girona, Olot or Besalú instead.
Rain changes stone surfaces, fog removes the cliff view and summer heat makes parked cars dangerous. Keep water with you, do not leave luggage visible, and let the driver remain alcohol-free. If one village is crowded or inaccessible, spend longer in the other two. The success of this route comes from three distinct pauses, not three completed names. Verify roads, parking and opening hours on the day.
